Some years after the death of his wife Lydia in 1850, he moved to Virginia where he found work with Allen Wells, who became a good friend of his. Joshua and his youngest daughter Salina lived with Allen and his family on their land for quite some time.
Joshua died on September 12, 1868 in Grayson County, Virginia near the Wilson Creek. He was 57 years old. It's said that he died the night after drinking too much water after working in the fields in the hot sun too long. The cause of death was proclaimed as Typhus Fever, which he got either from an insect like ticks or fleas; and/or possibly the water he was drinking was contaminated.
