Mrs. C. A. Absher
Caroline Elizabeth Absher, nee Backs was born near Okawville on March 24th, 1887, daughter Mr. and Mrs. August Backs.
The family moved to Okawville in 1894 where she grew to womanhood.
She received her elementary education in the schools of this place and attended Normal University at Carbondale, Ill., where she received the education to qualify her for teaching. She taught several years in the local grade school and various schools in the rural districts in the vicinity of Okawville. She was also employed for years as a clerk in the East St Louis Post office.
On December 18, 1920, she was united in marriage to C. A. Absher, local L & N agent, where she continued to make her home to the time of her death.
Mrs. Absher was an active member of the Ladies Aid Society of the local Methodist church, the Rebecca Lodge and the Okawville Women's Club. She was the first president of the Women's Club when it organized about 15 years ago. She always took an active interest in club work until her health failed and she was unable to attend the meetings or carry on the work.
On Friday, November 10, about 2:00pm she was suddenly stricken with a sever heart attack and was rushed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital at Belleville, where all possible was done to relieve her but to no avail, and at 1:15 am Saturday morning she was summoned to cross the bar and set sail to that bourn from which no traveler returns.
She was a firm believer in the teachings of Christ, and her love and devotion to her friends was very strong.
She has left to mourn her loss, her husband, C. A. Absher, one daughter, Mrs. Mel Marlen of Brentwood, Mo.; one son, Lieut. Harold R. Absher, who is now in service overseas; one sister, Miss Adeline Backs, of Okawville; two brothers, Charles W. of Wynne, Ark., and Harold F. of Belleville, Ill., and numerous other friends and relatives.
