Born February 7, 1928, in Lancaster County, Ray grew up in Heath Springs, SC. He was a son of the late Fred Burch and Ella Croxton Bowers .

He was predeceased by his three brothers, Howard (Heath Springs), Woodrow (Lancaster) and Carl (Kershaw) Bowers .

Ray was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Following his military service, he was employed by E.I. Dupont in Lugoff, SC. Ray earned an engineering degree from ICS. When he retired from DuPont in 1985, he was a supervisor in the Power Department.

He was a past member of First Baptist Church of Lancaster and Surfside Beach Baptist Church. He was a current member of Spring Valley Baptist Church.
