Don was born in Navarro, Texas. His father died during the depression and Don quit school to help support the family. He tried to enlist in the military when World War II started, but the doctor discovered he had TB. While he was being treated for the disease he met Jessie Evelyn Bradshaw, who he married. The couple moved to Dallas, where he enjoyed a long career delivering telegrams for Western Union. Don was the father of three children, Nancy, Kenneth and Brenda. He was a kind and generous man who died about a year after suffering a stroke that left him terribly debilitated.
