Agnes Mae "Jaime" Cooney
April 21, 1925 - May 24, 2014
Oakland

Entered peacefully into eternal rest on Saturday, May 24, 2014 in San Leandro.

Born April 21, 1925 in Danbury, Iowa to Mr. and Mrs. John Baptist Keitges. Her mother died giving birth to twins shortly before Agnes Mae's second birthday. She had fond memories of life on her grandparents' farm as well as working in her father's grocery store. She attended St. Patrick's Academy, run by the Presentation Sisters, for twelve years. She had perfect handwriting and had a passion for music, especially the piano.
Agnes left Iowa for California at age 19. She worked at the shipyards in Richmond, Shell Oil Laboratories, and Safeway Laboratories as a lab assistant. She attended Merritt College.

Married Paul Anthony Cooney, lived in El Cerrito, Lafayette, San Lorenzo, and Oakland. They had four children. Agnes was a devoted mother and considered this one of her greatest accomplishments. She was active in PTA, fundraisers, community projects, and the Oakland Diocese. Agnes worked for the Oakland USD, Skyline HS instructing business skills students in mathematics.

Later years were spent enjoying social dancing, friends, jokes, entertaining, flowers, taking neighborhood walks, crossword puzzles, comics, and family gatherings. She continued to study music at Laney College, and played piano for special events. Many were impressed by her incredible memory as she recited humorous and meaningful sayings, poems, and songs.

Her faith in God, knowledge of the lives of great saints, celebration of holidays, and belief in prayer were a fundamental part of her life until the very end.

Preceded in death by husband of nearly 60 years, Paul Anthony Cooney, brother John Craig Keitges, and her infant sister Josephine.

Survived by son, Craig (Kim), daughters, Carolyn (William), Claire, and Colleen; also, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren; cousins, many wonderful friends, and her beloved cat Nero, aka "Honey Cat". Agnes Mae's smile, warmth, thoughtfulness, generosity, and charm will be missed by all.
