J.Lee Milton Trial:
On last Monday the preliminary trial of J.Lee Milton, charged with the murder of Tom Akerman, took place in the court house here before Justice J C McLendon. The state was represented by Captain G O Dickey, County Solicitor and the defendant by Hon. J O Sentell. There were a large number of witnesses examined and the investigation of the case consumed the entire day. It was shown from the testimony that on Wednesday night a difficulty occurred between J Lee Milton and Tom Akerman, at the house of John Smith in beat 6 of Crenshaw County. At the time of the difficulty the parties were outside the house seated on a log, and were entirely alone. Words passed, and Milton plunged a large knife into the abdomen of Akerman, cutting a gash some two inches long. through which several feet of his bowels protruded. This occurred about 9 o'clock, a doctor reached the wounded man about 12 o'clock that night but Akerman died at 4 o'clock on the Monday morning. Milton promptly surrendered to the authorities and got up the plea of self defense. The case was ably and fully argued on both sides, and the court bound the defendant over to the Grand Jury in a bond of $2,000.00
