Sister Mary Pancratius

“The doctor said I may go to Mass tomorrow morning” said Sister Mary Pancratius on Holy Saturday.

Sister had spent several weeks in St. Catherine’s Hospital a pneumonia patient and convalescent, so her heart thrilled at the prospect of assisting at the Easter morning Alleluias. After sixty years spent in God’s service she died on the “day the Lord hath made.” Sudden as was the end there was time for the administration of the sacrament of Extreme Unction, fortified by which Sister closed her eyes on earthly surroundings.

Born in Scotland, Margaret McCoy came to American when a mere child. After spending some time in the east she came to Nebraska and entered the old Convent of Mercy at 24th and St. Mary’s Avenue, where she made her profession in 1882. Obedience placed her in various houses through the long years since then. The convent on Castelar Street, Father Flanagan’s Boys’ Home, and St. James Orphanage were scenes of prolonged labors. Her last assignment was St. Agnes Convent, South Omaha. From the new convent recently erected there she went to St. Catherine’s.

The funeral Mass was Tuesday morning from St. Mary’s college. Reverend Father Burke, pastor of St. Agnes, pronounced the absolution and asked prayers for the dear departed, Sister Mary Pancratius. May she rest in peace.
