Robert James Canfield, 87, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 in Duncan. Robert was born May 14, 1927 to
Edward and Lottie Canfield in Sacred Heart, Oklahoma.
He was the youngest of twelve children in the Canfield family and they were long time members of the Sacred Heart Community. He attended Sacred Heart and Konawa Schools. While at Konawa School he became an outstanding athlete, especially in football. He earned a scholarship to play football for the Oklahoma Sooners from Bill Jennings, the Athletic Director at that time.
He served two years in the United States Navy and was on board the US Miami, next to the US Missouri in the Tokyo Bay, when the Peace Treaty was signed.
He married Dewey Hamm in Henrietta, Texas on April 7, 1948. He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Duncan. He was a Tosco employee, retiring after thirty years of service. After his retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively through the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. On their 50th Anniversary they went to England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. He loved his
grandchildren dearly. He loved to work on his home and yard.
He is survived by his wife Dewey, of the home; two sons and daughter in laws: Dennis and Melissa Canfield and James and Gina Canfield, all of Duncan; seven grandchildren: Tim Canfield, Dennis Canfield, Robert Sloan Canfield, James Trent Canfield, Julie Canfield, Sarah Rose, and Ely Sellers all of Duncan; and one great-grandchild, Allison Grace Canfield.
