When William arrived in Vietnam 3 July 1967, he was assigned to A Company, 4th Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Division, USARV. The battalion was participating in Operation Greeley and were at Hill 830 and 12 kilometers south of Ben Het Village, when hostile forces launched an attack with small arms fire and
mortars. William died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from hostile mortar fire. The Army lost 26 men during the fighting.
Survived by his parents, Mr & Mrs John F Deuerling of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
