LAKELAND - Norma Barwick Harrell, 81, died September 21, 2013 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, from heart failure and complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
She was born August 30, 1932 in Plant City, FL and was a resident of Lakeland since 1950. She graduated from Florida Southern College with a degree in English and PE. While at FSC, she played four years of golf and tennis for the Mocs. She taught physical education at Lakeland Junior High School before marrying Jack Harrell on June 11, 1955. From that time forward, she fully embraced her significant role as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Jack were married for nearly 48 years, until his death in 2003.
Norma was a former tennis player and golfer, an avid sports fan, and loved to read. She was a member of the Florida Southern College Sixth Man Club, and rarely missed a Mocs basketball game until her health declined. She was also a faithful fan of Lakeland High School Football, the Florida Gators, and all the teams on which her grandchildren played. She was known for her quick wit, keen sense of humor, and her deep generosity in caring for the needs of others. Her home was always a place of welcome and fun for the friends of her children. Norma's greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a charter member of Lakeside Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities for fifty years. Her faith in Christ and serving the Lord was a priority in her life.
In addition to being predeceased by her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Deb Barwick of Plant City. Her father owned Barwick Drugs, where Norma often worked the soda fountain during her teenage years.
She is survived by her brother Tom (Frances), of Spring Hill, FL; her sister-in-law, Barbara Barwick, of Plant City; her children, Jack, Jr. (Tina) and Susie Wilson (Steve), of Lakeland; Mary Lu Strawbridge (Ted), of Ocala, Florida and Fred (Terely) of San Francisco, California; grandchildren: Jack and Will Harrell, Daniel (Jessica), Mary Beth and Jeremy Wilson, Samuel (Summer) Strawbridge, Carey (Bret) Robertson, Knox (Anna) Strawbridge, Jennifer (Daniel) Lembo and Anne Charlotte Strawbridge, John Mark, Victoria, Lucas and Lunden Harrell; great-grandchildren: Cameron, Brooklyn and Allison Strawbridge, Bryce and Connor Wilson and three nieces and their families, of Plant City.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 24, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Heath Funeral Chapel Tribute Center.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday, September 25, 10:00 a.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church.
