Samuel was my great grandfather. My aunt once told me that both he and his son Sam had bright red hair.

Obituary in Pembina (ND) Pioneer Express 20 March 1903, page 4:

"Samuel C. Ardies died at his home in Pembina on April 18th, (actually 17 March) 1903, aged 60 years, 2 mos, 26 days.

The death angel came without warning in the night. His faithful wife was awakened by hearing him gasp for breath. She shook him and spoke to him without answer and hastily lighting a lamp, came back to the bed to find him already gone. He had been in his usual health and was about the streets the day before. He had recently suffered from a severe cold but had apparently recovered from that several days before his death.

Mr. Ardies was born in Belfast, Ireland, and emigrated to Ontario when a young man. He came to this country in 1880 and settled on a farm near Pembina, where he resided until about two years ago, when he sold the farm and moved to the city and settled down to spend the remainder of his days in the peace and leisure that a lifetime of industry had earned for him. He was a good citizen, always interested in public affairs and kept himself well posted on all political questions of the day. He was a frequent and welcome visitor at this office and the writer will miss his calls and his queries and comments on matters of this sort. Simple and unassuming, but conscientious in his dealings, he did his duty as a man among men, and there is no higher eulogy to be given to any.

A large family survives to revere the name of a good father and to keep his memory green in their hearts. Besides the companion of his life, who will miss him more than all, there are the following children, all but the youngest of whom are grown up, and are heads of households of their own - William Ardies, deputy sheriff, and Mrs. George Hensal, of Pembina; Cunningham Ardies, of Bathgate; Mrs. F. C. Myrick Jr., of Roosevelt, Minn., and Samuel Ardies, the youngest, who resides at home. Two nieces, Mrs. Jones and Miss Ardies, are residents of Glasston, ND.

The funeral took place at the Presbyterian church, of which denomination deceased had been a life-long member, at Pembina on Thursday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation of relatives and friends, and the body was interred in the Pembina Cemetery."

I have never been able to find out anything about Samuel's origins; not his parents' names, or even for certain where he was born.

He definitely was related to the Ardies/Ardis families I've found in Canada, but none of these families' descendants are any more enlightened than I about their origins in Ireland.
