At the outbreak of the Civil War, on May 31st 1861, George Wayne Anderson enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant in the Georgia 2nd Infantry Company; known as the Republican Blues. By April 1863, George was a major and the Commander of Confederate forces; known as Emmett Rifles at Fort McAllister.
Maj. George Anderson surrendered the fort to General Sherman ending the war in Savannah; on December 13th 1864.
