Mickey"s death on April 28, 2009, was not publicly acknowledged for fear the heart-breaking news would prove fatal to her oldest sister, a stroke victim, Gladys Delany Usina. Gladys died on Nov. 6, 2010. Surviving family members are Grace C. and Kenneth D.
Mickey attended local Catholic schools, graduating from Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., in 1950. She was an outstanding all-around athlete playing basketball, softball and captain of their swim team. She attended Southwest Mississippi Junior College in McComb, Miss., on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1952.
Mickey enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent four years as a Corps Wave on hospital duty. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, she moved to Mobile, Ala., and entered the County Hospital School of Nursing, achieving the highest scholastic average for the entire pre-clinical period. For this, Mickey was awarded a scholarship that enabled her to continue toward her goals. In 1960, she was caped.
In 1962, as an R.N., Mickey joined the staff of Providence Hospital and became a valued member of the faculty for a number of years as an instructor and nurse.
Then, on Dec. 12, 1973, her birthday, the second phase of her life began. On that date she professed her vows as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in St. Louis, Mo. Thus her childhood dreams came true.
After a life of service to the nursing profession and to her religious vocation, she was called by God. At a later date, Mickey will be buried in National Cemetery, Jacksonville, with full military honors.
