Funeral rites set Sunday for Noted Educator
Funeral services for Prof. W.A.Rochelle, founder of Rochelle School for Negros here in Lakeland, will be held from Foster Memorial Methodist Church at 3p.m. Sunday.
The famed Negro educator, who died at the age of 89 in Morrell Memorial Hospital on Sunday, spent 55 years in the field of education, 22 as principal of Rochelle.
The Negro school, originally called Washington Park, changed its name to pay honor to Prof. Rochelle.
Born In A Boat
Active in all forward racial and inter-racial movements in Lakeland, Prof. Rochelle was born on the St. Johns River in a boat enroute to Lakeland. He earned credits from what is now Florida A&M University at Tallahassee. He did graduate work at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va.
Considered Lakeland's outstanding Negore citizen for many years, he was awarded a citation for his work in educational and community activities several years ago by the Negor Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of the St. James Lodge of Masons, Independent Pallbearers, Teachers Association and Negro Chamber of Commerce. Rochelle founded the Negro Boy Scouts in Lakeland and was active in Red Cross, Community Chest, Cancer and Polio drives.
He was one of the founders of the Foster Memorial Methodist Church and one of its trustees.
His wife, Lucy Rochelle, dies on August 7, 1955. He is survived by a brother, Elder Stamper, Rome,Ga.
sister; Dr.Emma Wheeler, Chattanooga, Tenn; and 5 grandchildren.
