ST. AUGUSTINE - Lula M. Robinson, 95, St. Augustine, formerly of Winter Haven, Fl., died May 17, 2012 at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab in St. Augustine, of natural causes.
She was born in Ocala but was a long time resident of Winter Haven, and moved to St. Augustine in 2004. She was a graduate of Hungerford Academy in Eatonville, Fl. She attended and graduated from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl. in 1939 receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She did further studies at NYU in New York City, NY, and FAMU in Tallahassee, Fl.
She began her teaching career in Melbourne, Fl., then moved to Winter Haven, Fl., where she taught Home Economics at Jewett High School for many years. She taught Home Economics at Union Academy in Bartow, Fl. for several years before retiring in 1975, after having a very distinguished career as an educator with the Polk County School District. She was a member of the Hurst Chapel A.M.E. Church in Winter Haven, Fl., OES, the Polk County Retired Educators Association, the Florida A&M University Alumni Association, and a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ollie E. and Kelly M. Baldwin, husband Canary Robinson, sister Ruby B. Russell and brother James W. Baldwin.
As a teenager growing up in Eatonville, Fl., Lula was a part-time typist for the folklore writer Zora Neal Hurston. She enjoyed traveling, reading and cooking, especially for family holiday gatherings. She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Hurst Chapel A.M.E. Church in Winter Haven and held several offices during her membership.
She leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Claudia B. Williams of Washington, D.C. 1st cousins Mary Lou Adams of Miami, Fl. and Neil Baldwin of Atlanta, Ga., nephew Ronald T. Russell (Edwina) of St. Augustine, nieces, Janice C. Johnson (Jesse) of Washington Township, N.J., Jeannine Baldwin of Oak Park, Il., Yvonne Brown (Bishop) of Lanham, Md., Carolyn A. Williams of Washington, D.C., nephew, James Baldwin, Jr. of Eatonville, Fl., and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and other relatives to celebrate her legacy.
Memorial services to celebrate her life will be, Thursday June 7, 2012 at the Hurst Chapel A.M.E. Church in Winter Haven, Fl.
The family of the late Mrs. Lula Baldwin would like to thank the staff and care givers of the Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab Center and the North Florida Community Hospice for their compassionate, diligent and professional care that made her stay at Moultrie Creek comfortable and dignified.
