In 1903 Bob left North Carolina for Grangeville, Idaho where his brother Samuel was working, he found a job herding sheep on Craig mountain and stayed for two years and then a friend Oscar Rape talked him into taking a homestead.

He homesteaded 160 acres near Whitebird, Idaho ,he farmed and raised some cattle and sheep, he lived there 14 months to qualify his claim and in due time received a deed to the property. He then lived at Grangeville and Harpster, for short periods, At Pollock near Riggins, Idaho about ten years and then at Lewiston where he poured concrete at Potlatch Corp. Mill. He worked at Wawawai five summers helping gardeners, and then herded sheep again for five years in the mountains above Kooskia for George Bushman of Clarkston.

Bob then divorced his wife (Nellie) in 1942 , and in 1943 he moved back to Ashe County , North Carolina where he bought a 39 acre farm in the Idlewild/Fleetwood community, where he raised tobacco, milked cows and later raised white face cattle and trained oxen to harness.

Then Bob married Callie Calloway Blackburn they were married for 28 years.and lived there for 30 years. Then After Callie's death Bob returned to Lewiston.

Bob then married Jennie Bergh October 8th , 1970, eight months before her death in June 1971. He was a member of the Pine Swamp Baptist church in Idlewild, N.C. The Mountain View Assembly of God in Lewiston, and the Faith Tabernacle in Lewiston.
