NECK BROKEN
John Allen Killed in a Runaway Accident.
Was Pitched Head First from a Buggy.
Death Resulting Instantly.
Other Occupant of the Buggy Not Hurt.
From Wednesday's Daily.
Shortly before 10 o'clock this forenoon Frank Jackson brought the news to town that John Allen whose home is at the corner of Sixteenth and P streets, had been killed near the home of Hugh Jackson, about three miles southwest of Bedford.
Mr. Allen had been down in the country to visit his daughter, Mrs. Neal Cooper, and was walking home. He was overtaken by a Mr. Inman, who was coming to town in a buggy and who asked him to get in and ride, which he did. At the home of Hugh Jackson they passed a team and wagon, belonging
to John Hudson, standing in the road, where Mr. Hudson had left them, while he went over to where the Sproull Bros. are drilling a well for Mr. Jackson.
Shortly after Mr. Inman and Mr. Allen had passed about 9 o'clock, Hudson's team became frightened and ran. The back curtain of the buggy was down and neither Mr. Inman nor Mr. Allen heard the horses as they dashed up behind, or if they heard did not think of a runaway until the wagon struck the buggy. Mr. Inman was able to jump and escaped without injury, but Mr. Allen was pitched out of the buggy heard first. His neck was broken in the fall, and a gash three or four inches long was cut in the top of his head, having struck on a rock. Death was almost instantaneous.
As soon as the accident happened, Frank Jackson started to town to notify Mr. Allen's family and the coroner. Coroner Voyles went immediately to the scene and found that death resulted as stated. As soon as the coroner had viewed the remains, they were brought to Mr. Allen's home in this city.
Mr. Allen was a highly respected citizen about 75 years of age, and was an old soldier. His son, Charley Allen, clerks in Walker's clothing store and was married last week.
