The sudden death of Hon. William H. Steele at the Altmar house in that village on Wednesday evening, of last week removed from eastern Oswego county one of its most prominent men. He conducted an extensive mercantile business in Altmar and was about till after the close of the store Saturday the 16th When he was stricken with heart trouble. William H. Steele was born in Windhem, Greene Co., N.Y., Nov 9, 1838, At the age of nine years he set out to get an education and at fifteen he was qualified to enter Yale college from which institution he graduated, when but nineteen gave privater tutoring lessons and then took up teaching. He taught in Camden and then took up the study of law. February 20, 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Augusta Burhans of Delhi. Three children were born to them. Mrs. Steele died at Oswego in 1890. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. F. Ballou, of Syracuse. Burial in Riverside cemetery, Oswego.
