BETSY HARRIS, 67, a resident of Memphis for the past 39 years, passed away at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East on Saturday, April 22, 2006, after a four-month battle with a severe respiratory illness. Betsy Ann Lensman was born June 2, 1938 at Missoula, Montana, a daughter of Jesse John Lensman and Verna Margaretha Wilhelmine Detert. She grew up at St. Ignatius, Montana where she graduated from High School in 1956. After graduation, she lived at Coronado, California until 1959 when she moved to be near her father who was a correctional officer at Montana State Prison at Deer Lodge, Montana. There she worked as a Records Clerk in the Powell County Clerk and Recorders Office. In 1965, she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she worked as a salesperson for Packard Bell and where she would meet her soon to be husband, John Wormeley Harris III of Memphis. They married at Zion Lutheran Church at St. Ignatius on October 6, 1967. The newlyweds made their home in Memphis since that time, where they would care for John's mother, Weir Mallory Harris, who had been widowed at the unexpected death of her husband, the Honorable John W. Harris, Judge for the Memphis Court of Appeals in 1966. Since that time Betsy had worked for the University of Memphis as a switchboard operator and later in the financial Aid Office as a Records Specialist. She retired from the University in 2003. Betsy was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Memphis since 1970. A heart attack claimed the life of her beloved husband in 1988. For those who knew Betsy, her laughter and cheery personality was always at the ready. We will miss her gift of true friendship, love and devotion. She cherished every friendship she made. Her friendships were tested in the last months of her life, yet they endured to the end. She didn't get the chance to express her sincere thanks to Yvonne Meyers, Judy Theobald, Oscar and Laura Meek, Anne Parker, Bob and Kathy Hinson, Ray and Shirley Medline who were among her closest friends, all of whom made special efforts and provided assistance as caregivers in her time of need. Betsy was predeceased by both of her parents, husband, and her brother Jesse Lensman. She leaves behind two aunts, Marie Detert and Hazel Detert of St. Ignatius; two nephews, Jeffrey Lensman of South Ogden, Utah, and Kevin Lensman of Kalispell, Montana; cousins John Detert of Yelm, Washington, Jim Detert of St. Ignatius and Keila Forthun of Minot, North Dakota, Wilma Golden of Mill City, Oregon; Donna Burns of Salem, Oregon and a great-niece, Jessica Lensman; and a great-nephew, Bridger Lensman of Frenchtown, Montana. There will be a graveside service at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 29 at Elmwood Cemetery.
