Lucy E. (Van Cleef) Baumgartner went to be with her Lord and Savior while tidying up her kitchen on July 16, 2013. She was born in Portland, Ore., to Jack and Leona (Jacques) Van Cleef on Aug. 7, 1930. She grew up in Salem and Mount Angel, Ore., where she met the love of her life, Glen Baumgartner (deceased). They were married in Mount Angel on Sept. 16, 1950, and immediately moved back to the family farm in Genesee, Idaho, where Lucy and Glen owned and operated Baumgartner Grain and Cattle Co. She lived as a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother in the same house for 62 years. Lucy and Glen had eight children: Sean Gardner of Santa Fe, N.M.; Dave Baumgartner (wife Mary) of Genesee; Marilyn Barnes (husband Cris) of Santa Fe; Teresa Szabo (husband Tom) of Bartlett, Ill.; Jim Baumgartner (wife Rhonda) of Genesee; Joanie Baumgartner (deceased); Ann Williams (husband Gary) of Lewiston, Idaho; and Don Baumgartner (wife Kathi) of Meridian, Idaho.

Lucy had 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Jacob and Daniela Larson, Matt and Wendy Williams, Benjamin Larson, Ryan Baumgartner, Christopher and Julie Ann Baumgartner, Ambrosia Williams, Joni and Jerry Bennett, Sam Larson, Julie Liz Baumgartner and Ryan Benner, Aaron Baumgartner, Jon Baumgartner, Susie Barnes, Elizebeth Barnes, Jessica Baumgartner, Lucas Baumgartner, Lance Baumgartner, Lauren Baumgartner, Markus Larson, Hanna Baumgartner, Sarah Bennett, Katelyn Bennett and McKena Baumgartner.

Lucy was sister to Joseph Van Cleef (deceased) and to Ann Marten of Maple Valley, Wash., and sister-in-law to Father Andrew Baumgartner of Jerome, Idaho, and Dorothy Diehl of Mount Angel, Ore.

Lucy loved the Lord, she loved her family and she loved her Catholic community, attending daily Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church for years. She was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. She was an RCIA leader and also taught the First Communion CCD class for generations of young second-graders. A gifted singer, she often sang for weddings, funerals and in the church choir. Thanks to her far-flung family, she was a world traveler, making trips to Belgium, Ireland, Italy, New York, Hawaii, Illinois, Florida, New Mexico and Alaska. At home, she loved her flowers, her vast vegetable garden and her berry patch. She was full of joy when her table, which could easily seat 20, was packed with hungry guests. For a small woman in a small town, she made a big impact across many lives and will be remembered with great and special fondness.

A recitation of the Rosary will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Genesee. A funeral Mass will begin at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Genesee or to the Glen Baumgartner Scholarship fund at Genesee High School.
