Robert Ross was a county motorcycle officer working for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. While so employed, he stopped a motorist for speeding at the corner of Main and S. 157th Street in unincorporated Gardena/Compton area. As Ross stood next to the stopped vehicle, he was struck by a trailer towed by a passing car which hit a large pothole causing it to swerve into him. The collision caused a basal fracture to Ross's skull. He died several hours later.
