Mildred M. Wood, age 96, passed away in her sleep at Millers Assisted Living in Portage on January 30, 2006. Mildred was born in Streator, IL on May 4, 1909. She was a member of the Marquette Park United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex; her parents: Janet and Alex Marshall; sisters: Mary (Regan), Bella (Humphrey), Bessie (Bailey), Janet Marshall and brothers: George and John Marshall. Mildred is survived by her son, William (Barbara) Wood of Chesterton; her four grandsons: Jeffrey (Linda) Wood of Hudson, OH, William (Avril) Wood of Yorba Linda, CA, David Wood of Chesterton and Brian (Lisa) Wood of Indianapolis, IN; six great-grandchildren: Christopher Wood of Chicago, IL, Sarah Wood of Hudson, OH, Heather and David Wood of Valparaiso and Alexandria and Megan Wood of Yorba Linda, CA; cousin, Marion Cambre of Hickory, NC. Mildred was a member of The Daughters of Scotia and served as Grand Chief. She also volunteered at the Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillville for over 36 years. Mildred spent 8 years in England in the 1930's where her husband, Alex, played professional soccer and was on the the United States first World Cup Team. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Rees Funeral Home, 5341 Central Avenue, Portage, with Pastor Tracey Leslie, officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso. Friends may visit from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Marquette Park United Methodist Church.
