My cousin Gene was an outspoken man. As he and all my cousins and my own brother and sister were so much older than I, I didn't know him well.

Serving in Guam as a repairman, his life's passion was airplanes. My mother said that even as a boy, Gene had model planes in his bedroom. Along with two neighbors, Gene had a small airstrip behind his house, along with his own hangar that he rented out (or knowing him, didn't charge) for small planes.

Gene was married to a schoolteacher named Helen, and they had two daughters. One daughter died as a teen-ager of throat cancer, which also took the life of my dad (her great-uncle).

Gene died of a sudden massive heart-attack while walking out his lane to pick up his mail.

I remember going to his viewing: his coffin had a patriotic flower display. A year and a half later, my own husband died of a sudden massive heart attack.

After Gene's death, his wife lost her very courageous battle with cancer.

Gene and Helen are buried in front of their daughter Barbara and Gene's sister Geneva.

SPECIAL THANKS TO STEVE EDQUIST FOR SPONSORING GENE'S MEMORIAL.
