Evelyn "Maw" Garland, age 80, of Bakersville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 12th, 2014 at Missions Memorial Campus. A native of Mitchell County, she was a daughter of the late Garrett Tipton. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, John Garland; daughter, Benita Maney and a brother, Wade Tipton. Evelyn was a member of Heaven Bound Baptist Church where she played the piano. Evelyn never knew a stranger, lived her entire life serving others and will always be remembered for her sweet spirit. She enjoyed cooking, watching the Atlanta Braves baseball and Carolina basketball.

Surviving is her mother; Ruby Garland Tipton; her daughters: Debbie Ollis and husband, David, of Burnsville, and Janet Cook and husband, Phillip, of Bakersville; sisters: Edna Griffith of Red Hill and Elaine Laws and husband Dale, of Green Mountain; grandchildren: Kenny Maney and wife, Lisa, Mark Maney, Tonya McCoyle, Billy Shepherd and wife, Lydia, Ryan Cook and wife, Shana and Kasey Cook and wife, Cara; great- grandchildren: Monica Phillips, Megan Woody, Bradley Shepherd, Piper, Sawyer and Jonah Cook and great-great grandson, Tristan Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday, July 16, 2014 in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Steve Glenn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Garland Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 2 pm on Wednesday prior to the services at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Heaven Bound Baptist Church, Mine Creek Road Bakersville, NC 28714.
