Amanda was born July 16, 1858 on the farm near Adamsville in Muskingum County, Ohio, the fifth of eight children of Casper Melcher and Elizabeth Stiverson. Her siblings were:

Amanda married Thomas Penrose Naylor 31 March 1880 in Topeka, Kansas. Thomas was born 7 April 1858 in Penn, Morgan, Ohio, the son of Oliver W. Naylor (1830-1906) and Mary H. Worral (1832-1886). His siblings were Lizzie, Mary, Carrie, James, and Nellie.

Amanda and Thomas had seven children: Elizabeth, Marshall, Laura, Hugh, Oliver, Margaret, and Myrle. Amanda and Thomas lived at various times in Topeka, Holton, and Seneca in Kansas, and at Beatrice, Pawnee City, and Falls City in Nebraska.

Thomas died 26 August 1922 in Falls City, Richardson, Nebraska.

After her husband's death, "Aunt Callie" (as she was called by her family), lived with each of her married daughters from time to time. She traveled frequently, to California among other places. She spent her last days however, in Falls City and on 15 December 1936, she died there at the age of 78 years.
