Crinan de Mormaer (Crinan The Thane) was born in 975 in Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of Duncan Lord of Mormaer (949-1040) and Sibyl Bjornsson (951-?).

Crinan married Bethoc Mac Malcolm (Bethoc Beatrix Princess Of Scotland) - (984-1045) in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland in the year of 1000. Princess Bethoc was the daughter of Malcolm II Mackenneth(954-1034) - (Malcolm II of Scotland Máel Coluim mac Cináeda, King of the Scots from 1005 until 1034) and Aefgifu Queen of Scotland.

Crinan and Princess Bethoc were the parents of the following known children: Duncan I King of Scotland born 1001 Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland died 14 August 1040, Iona, near Elgin, Scotland buried Iona, near Elgin, Scotland. Daughter of Crinan de Mormaer Princess of Scotland born about 1011 Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. Maldred Earl Of Dunbar, King of Scotland born about 1015 Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland died about 1045.

Crínán of Dunkeld was the lay abbot of the diocese of Dunkeld, and perhaps the Mormaer of Atholl. Crínán was progenitor of the House of Dunkeld, the dynasty which would rule Scotland until the later 13th century. As Máel Coluim had no son, the strongest hereditary claim to the Scottish throne descended through Bethóc, and Crinán's eldest son, Donnchad (reigned 1034–1040), became King of Scots. Crinán's second son, Maldred of Allerdale, held the title of Lord of Cumbria. It is said that from him, the Earls of Dunbar, for example Patrick Dunbar, 9th Earl of Dunbar, descend in unbroken male line.

Crinan held numerous titles, among which were Of the kin of St. Columba, Lord of the Isles, Governor of Scots Island, Earl of Strathclyde, and Hereditary Lay Abbot of Dunkeld. Crinan does seem to have acted as Abbot in charge of the monastery in his time. He was thus a man of high position in both clerical and secular society. He held lands at Athol. Royal Ancestors; Royal Daughter of England; Queens of Scotland and English Princes.

Crinan de Mormaer was killed in battle by Macbeth in 1045 in Dunkeld, in Strathtay, Perth and Kinross, Scotland. He was 70 years old.
