David the son of William H. Johnston and Gertrude F. Johnston of Tucson AZ, dear nephew of Helen Funk of Waynesboro PA enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on February 11 1965 in Phoenix AZ. In Vietnam he was assigned for duty and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the last part of May the Battalions mission was a search and destroy operation in the lowland area of the Phong Dien District Xuan Dien village complex of Thua Tien Province. On May 29 Company G made contact with a large VC force that turned out to be a day long battle with the enemy. Additional units responded to the engagement and arrived at the battle in assistance by late afternoon the enemy had broken contact and fled. The Companies made a final sweep of the area and were ordered back to their respective CP's (Command Posts). Casualties inflicted on the Marines during the fire fights were 21 killed and 16 wounded in the action. One of the casualties was PFC Johnston, he was killed in action from a hostile gunshot wound.
