Eugene was born the third of five children to Helen (Collins) and Thomas S. Merriam on Sept. 10, 1928, in Ward. On Aug. 21, 1949, in Black Creek, N.Y., he married Doris J. Barringer, who predeceased him in November 2002.
He graduated in 1946 from Scion Central School.
He was lifelong resident of Wellsville area. He had several jobs as he worked on several area farms of Western New York, employed by Lunn Lumber and South Main Lumber, both of Wellsville. He was always a handy man. He was a member of 50 member of Genesee Valley Grange Scio, as well as an active member of Allegany County Pomona Grange, New York State Grange and National Grange.
He had no children but many, many beloved nieces and nephews. He helped raised a niece, Yvonne M. (James) Perrin of Oramel for many years.
Surviving is a brother, Floyd Edward (Betty) Merriam of Houghton; a long time significant other, Mary jane Wells of Belmont.
He was predeceased by his other brothers, Orville Wesley (Florence) Merriam of Wellsville, James Wilder (Martha) Merriam of Friendship and Henry Uri (Wetoma) of Merriam of Rushford.
No interment will be at this time as his body was donated to the University of Buffalo Medical School.
