David Barrett came to America (Charleston, S. C.) with his parents about 1825 and settled near Sharon, South Carolina. During the trip to America, his younger brother died on the ship and was tied to a plank and set adrift. David's father (James) fell from a house under construction in York, S.C. and died, and his mother died from smallpox soon afterwards. David was an orphan at the age of 9. He was adopted by the Pearson family, who treated him well. He learned to read and later became a miller. His first wife was Margaret Ingram of York. Later, after Margaret's death, he married Sarah McCarter (Jackson).
