Betty was born to Earl and Lillian Wentworth. She grew up in Topeka, where she met and married MAJ (Retired) C.G. "Pete" Gates on May 31, 1947. He died on July 12, 1995. She was a homemaker, making a home for her family in many places during her husband’s military career.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita Eubanks and Dale of Lawton and Laura Glenn-Thompson and Terry of Fresno, California; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward Wentworth and Barbara of Topeka, Kansas; a sister, Marie McMinn of Kansas City, Missouri; six grandchildren, Catherine J. Sinning and husband, Dennis, of Eldridge, Iowa; Michael Munos and wife, Amy, of San Antonio, Texas; Thomas J. Munos and wife, Laura, of Corpus Christi, Texas; John David Glenn, III and wife, Stacy, of Georgetown, Texas; Melanie Fortier and husband, Warren, of Fresno, California; Christine Sloan of Lexington, Kentucky; and eleven great grandchildren.

Her husband, a son, Robert L. Gates, and a brother, Earl J. Wentworth, preceded her in death.

Services were held in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Irv Johnson, Chaplain, Hospice of Southwest Oklahoma, officiating.
Entombment was under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home.
