November 6, 1904—February 1, 1995

August A. Smit, 90, of Hull died Wednesday, February 1, at the Sioux Center Community Health Center.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 4, at American Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Phillip Sneller officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.

Smit was born November 6, 1904, in Alton, the son of John W. and Louise (De Boer) Smit.

He married Gertie Vis at Hull on February 10, 1926. The couple farmed near Hull until 1972, when they retired into town. He became a resident of Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull In June 1988. She died February 5, 1990, at Hull. He transferred to the Sioux Center Community Health Center in April 1991.

He was a member of American Reformed Church In Hull, where he had served on the consistory and was secretary of the Sunday school for 40 years.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Arnold and Betty of Orange City, Delmar and Ardel of Ireton, Howard and Arlene of Ontario, California, and Allen and Rose of Sioux Falls; three daughters and their husbands, Phyllis and Marvin Wissink of Sioux Center, Luella and Bud Krommendyk of Ontario and Judy and Jim Kersbergen of Arlington. Texas; a sister, Mrs. Gerrit (Julia) Hofkamp of Sibley; 29 grandchildren; 60 greatgrandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Darlene) Van Otterloo; an infant son, Alfred; two brothers, Walter and Dowie Smit; and two grandchildren.
