William enlisted into the U.S. Army at Ft. Niagara, Youngstown County, New York on March 17, 1942. Part of his service was as a sargeant in the finance department at Ft. Dix in 1945.
William married Kathryn E. Murphy on December 26, 1943. They adopted a son, William J. Van Houten, Jr.
