Robert was the last of the eight children born to George Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth "Bessie" Viola (Taylor) Ristine.

Robert served in the United States Marines in the Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II.

In 1945, Robert married Thelma Hagy. The couple had two children together; Robert Gregory Ristine Jr. and Mary Ann Ristine.
