Elmer (Ed) Purdy was born on Aug. 1861 to William Purdy and Margaret Clifton in Ontario, Canada. In 1900, Elmer and his younger brother Herbert Ernest Purdy were living in Corral, Blaine County, Idaho, USA. About 1910, Elmer homesteaded NE9-34-20-W4M, near Scollard, Alberta. In 1916, Elmer Purdy (age 55), his sister, Adeline Matilda "Tillie" Purdy (age 52), his brother Hassard (age 58) and wife Charlotte (age 37) and their children, Helena Charlotte (age 10), William Herbert (age 8), Clara Mae (age 6) and Mary Louise (age 3) were living on the homestead. Elmer and Hassard were both farmers.

While farming near Scollard, Alberta Elmer married Alice (Beattie) Beatrice Lane. They farmed for several years before moving to British Columbia where Elmer was interested in prospecting. They lived at Beaton, then Malakwa and finally settled on North Pender Island, all in B.C. Elmer died, age 93, on Nov. 11, 1954 and is interred near Beattie in North Pender Cemetery, North Pender Island, BC.
