Uncle Bert was the son of Percival and Edith Ricketts. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. He married Geraldine "Jerry" Howe in 1937. They had three sons and one daughter. They lived at 1858 Mountain Blvd in the Oakland Hills. During the terrible fire of 1991 Jerry evacuated their home, but Bert stayed. He got up on ladders of his roof and that of two neighbors and put out sparks with water from a long hose.
