Passed away July 15, 2014 at Clifford Chester Sims Veteran's Nursing Home in Panama City, Florida. Mr. Bacon was born in Savannah, Georgia on July 12, 1924. He enlisted in the US Navy in June 1941 and took his "BOOT" training at the Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia. During his Naval career, he served aboard eleven ships as well as some Shore Duty.
While serving aboard the USS Cable (ARS-19), he was awarded the Purple Heart from shrapnel wounds received in the line of duty, the Letter of Commendation for meritorious performance of duty in fighting fire during an air attack on the USS Achilles, and the Unit Citation. He participated in the invasions of Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, Borneo, Lingayen Gulf and Balikpapan, served in the Asiatic-Pacific area and China.
HE was a Plank owner of the USS Cable and the USS Coral Sea and was a crew member of the Commissioning of the USS Coral Sea. He retired as Senior Chief Petty Officer after 26 years of active duty from the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard Commissary Store.
After retirement, he worked in the Whiting Field Commissary Store in Milton, Florida; and in the Ellyson Field and Saufley Field Educational Centers in Pensacola, Florida.
He was pre-deceased by father: Rufus Lester Bacon; mother; Clara Dicie Brinson Bacon, and two brothers and three sisters. Also his wife of 59 years, Gertrude Lucille Martin Bacon, who passed away August 28, 2009.
He is survived by one son, Wayman G. Bacon; daughter-in-law, Linda Bacon; and grand-daughter Kendal Bacon of Milton, Florida. Visitation will be at west Florida Baptist Church at 9AM with services to follow at 10AM Saturday, July 19, 2014. Burial will be in Serenity Gardens Cemetery.
HE was a member of the West Florida Baptist Church for over 35 years. Pastor Alan Stewart officiating.
