With the coming of the First World War, Martin and his Chicago-born older brother, George, went into service in the German Army. Martin, a pioneer in Bavarian Reserve Pioneer Company 16, was killed in action in an attack by the 6th Bavarian Landwehr Division against French positions on the bitterly contested mount known as the Schratzmannele (Schratzmannle).
His brother, George, served in the 12th Company, Bavarian Infantry Regiment Nr. 15, and survived the war.
Martin was first buried at Giragoutte. He was later moved to the German War Cemetery Hohrod, where he lies in Block 3, Grave 368.
