ABBOTT AWARDED DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS.
S-SGT. JAMES ABBOTT. AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE, LIBERATOR STATION, ENGLAND.
The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to S-Sgt. James M. Abbott, of Ames for "extraordinary achievement in aerial combat."
The announcement of the award as made by Major General James P. Hodges, commanding general of a Liberator Bombardment Division.
The husky, (he weighs 200 pounds and is six feet three inches tall) red-haired Ames gunner does his fighting on a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber and already has participated in 30 bombing missions over Germany and enemy occupied Europe.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Abbott, of 1011 Burnett, Ames.
Before enlisting into the army Nov. 3, 1942, Abbott was employed in the county engineer's office at Pocahontas and he attended Iowa State college. He received his combat training at Wendover Field, Utah and has been overseas since March 11, 1944.
The award of the Distinguished Flying Cross followed through consistently with Abbott's record in his gunnery training. He was top man in a class of 310 gunners at the Harlengen, Texas, gunnery school.
Besides the Distinguished Flying Cross, Sgt. Abbott also holds the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters to his credit.

Charles City—Services for James Abbot, 54, an art instructor at the Charles City High School, who died Wednesday while at work at Arnolds Park, will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City; scripture service at 8 p.m. Friday at the Hauyser Funeral Home in Charles City; burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens; survivors include his wife, Rose; a son James at home; two daughters, Mrs. William Raisch of Des Moines and Mrs. Michael Ritter of Cody, Wyo.; his mother, Mrs. Melvin Abbot of Ames; three brothers, Robert, Alan and Charles, all of Ames; and five sisters, Mrs. Gene Rulestead of Estherville, Mrs. Joseph Busch of Warren Ohio, Mrs. Victor Johnson, Mrs. Ted Birdseye and Mrs. Conrad Berhow, all of Ames.

Visitation will be until time of services at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, with burial in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City. Parish scripture service was to be 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Abbott as a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, a Charles City High School art instructor, oner of the Wooden Nickel Grocery Store, member of the Charles City Community Education Association, the Charles City Art Association, the Elk's Club and the Charles City Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; his mother, Mrs. Melvin Abbott, Ames; two daughters, Mrs. William (Suzanne) Halsch, Des Moines, and Mrs. Michael (Michelle) Ritter, Cody, Wyo.; a son, James, at home; three grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Gene (Betty) Rulestead, Estherville, Mrs. Joseph (Janet) Busch, Warren, Ohio and Mrs. Victor (Barbara) Johnson; Mrs. Theodore (Beverly) Birdseye, and Mrs. Conrad (Joyce) Berhow, all of Ames, and three brothers, Robert, Alan and Charles, all of Ames.
