In 1955, he was appointed Judge of the Burlington County Court, and served in that capacity until 1966 when he was appointed to the Superior Court of New Jersey. Judge McGann sat in nine different counties during his tenure as a Superior Court Judge. He was also appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to several important committees. He presided over a number of important trials including the Campisi Organized Crime Trial and authored a number of opinions.
He retired from the bench on October 20, 1976. Subsequently, he was the Candidate for the United States Congress on the Democratic ticket with Jimmy Carter and Bill Bradley. At that time he was 'Of Counsel' with the law firm of Hartman, Schlesinger, Schlosser and Faxon, and later to the firm of Begley, McCloskey and Gaskill, not finally retiring until the age of ninety.
Judge McGann was also active in various service clubs and public endeavors during his varied career. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a Trustee of the Sierra Club. In 2002, he was honored by being invested as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Burlington Council of Boy Scouts, past Chairman of the March of Dimes of Moorestown, and a member of the Lions Club.
In 1986, Judge McGann organized the Catholic Christmas Campaign, a non-profit charitable foundation, to promote the spirit of Christmas and to assist individuals in need of help in Burlington County. In 1992, Judge McGann was privileged to be chosen as 'Man of the Year' from Burlington County by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Trenton.
He was especially proud of his Irish heritage, treated his family to many trips to Ireland, and was an avid student of Irish history and culture. He also authored numerous articles of historic significance.
He is survived by his wife, Regina Kelly McGann; one son, Michael K. McGann and his wife Patricia; five daughters and their spouses, Rose Marie and Joseph McBride, Barbara and Francis Hartman, Joy Faxon and her life partner Michelle Foley, Regina and Judge Gregory McCloskey, Joan and Regis Legath; 22 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his two sons, W. Thomas McGann, Jr. and Robert E. McGann; his parents, John and Mary McGann; and eight siblings.
