They lived for a time in Texas and then moved to New Mexico with the Neatherlin family. In 1900 they were living near Lower Penasco, Chaves, New Mexico Territory.

27 NOV 1855. Family tradition: "While hunting, John Thomas Champion was in a tent cleaning his gun; the gun went off and killed him". A grave has not been located. death was between 1900 and 1905
