Docia was the daughter of Edward Wesley Banister and Lucy Jane Newsom. A native of Talladega County, Alabama, she was first married to John William Patterson and had two daughters, Matilda and Seanzie. After his death, she married William Samuel Singleton and had four additional children.

Docia and her family moved to Forney circa 1900. Her husband William died suddenly on October 31, 1903, after which she lived with her married children. It is estimated that she died in 1914 and that she is buried in an unmarked grave in the Forney Hillcrest Cemetery, based on the purchase of a cemetery lot by her son John in 1914.
