George W. Kipps was born about 1831 in Virginia. The Kipps family lived in Blacksburg, VA and included his parents John and Mary Kipps and siblings Michael Kipps, Noah Kipps, Samuel Kipps, Catherine Kipps Price, Sarah Kipps Custard/Custer, Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" Kipps Linkous, and Lucinda Kipps Custard. George moved to Liberty, Texas sometime after 1850 and was recorded in the census there in 1860. He was still working as a carpenter. On the 7th of May 1861, George W. Kipps enlisted as a private in Co. H, 4th Reg Texas Inf. in Washington County, TX. At some point he became engaged to Noah and Michael's sister-in-law, Jaetta Hart Linkous, who lived in Blacksburg, VA in the Henry Linkous Homestead off Merrimac Rd. He sent her a seedling to show his love for her. This tree was planted on the grounds of her family home where it has grown. Sgt. George W. Kipps was killed in action on the 6th of May 1864 during The Battle of the Wilderness in VA. Jaetta never married and is quoted as saying, "It is better to love what you cannot have than to have what you cannot love."
