Charles the son of Charles B. Ellis and Mary B. Ellis of Oradell New Jersey entered service (Selected Service) in the U.S. Marine Corps on January 26 1966 in Newark NJ. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3d Marines, 3rd MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of September the Battalion was engaged in its mission of patrolling in it's assigned sector of operations north of the Da Nang Military Complex in Quang Nam Province. On September 13, two squad patrols in the vicinity of the Quang Nam village complex in Hoa Vang District mistook each others movements for the enemy and opened fire. Two Marines were killed and two were wounded in the exchange, one of the casualties was PFC Ellis who was killed by a gunshot wound.
