After the deaths of her brother when she was only five (in 1903) and of her mother when Edith was only eight years old (1906), her father sent her to live with her Uncle Charles, Aunt Clara De Verna and their seven children. By 1915, the household of 12 people included Edith's cousin Clara's husband and child. Her Uncle Charles was a carpenter in the theatre and her cousin Edward worked in the theatre as an electrician. On Jan 14, 1918 at the age of 19, she married Patrick William Hughes, who lived in the same building at 74 W. 101 Street, Manhattan. They had a son Patrick and a daughter Virginia. In 1940, Edith was the head of the household. The family rented an apartment at 188 W 102nd St., which was in the same area but not the same house as they lived in 1935 (that address is unknown). She supported her family by working as a matron for the NYC Parks Dept. Edith spent many years working for the NYC Parks Dept. First she started out as a matron cleaning the bathrooms, then she became a boss. She worked with children in the park. Edith spent her later years in Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, NY. She was buried with her mother and brother.

Patrick's final resting place is unknown.
