George was predeceased by his parents, John E. and Anne M. (Dupree) Fox; his sisters: Margaret and Marion, and his brothers: John and Robert.
George was a lifelong resident of Worcester. He was a 1936 graduate of Saint John's High School, where he was a two time All City football player. In 1999, he was inducted into the Saint John's Hall of Fame.
George graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1940 and enlisted in the Marine Corps on December 8, 1941. George served in World War II as a Marine infantryman in the Pacific theatre, where he fought in the Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Tinian and Saipan campaigns.
George was awarded the Silver Star and also received two Purple Hearts for his courageous service. In 1997, the Armed Services Committee of Worcester County gave him its Award of Merit for military and community service.
Returning to Worcester, George was employed for over 30 years as the Tax Title Officer of the City. He was also a member of the First Friday Club, the Retired Men's Club of Greendale, the Emerald Club and many other organizations including several veterans groups.
George's proudest moments occurred each summer when he hosted a "Christmas in July" party for the Mercy Centre children, when he would arrange a complete picnic luncheon, accompanied by animal rides, music, and a Santa visit. Santa always traveled on a WFD ladder truck and he brought a present for each child at the Centre. George hosted this event for 35 years and in 1979 was awarded the Emerald Club Shillelagh Award for his outstanding service. Semper Fidelis.
