Sacred to the memory of Cpl F Lord, L/Cpl A Walsh , Pte W G Heppenstall who lost their lives through an explosion in Castlecomer 25 September 1919. Erected by their comrades of the 2nd / 1st (A P W O) Yorkshire Hussars."

George Frederick Heppenstall is now on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register as from Wednesday 31st January 2007. The different spelling is because that is the way it is spelt on the death certificate.

Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922
The following extract is from Huddersfield's Roll of Honour: 1914-1922 (2014) by J. Margaret Stansfield:

HEPPENSTALL, GEORGE FREDERICK. Private. No 60817 2nd/1st Yorkshire Hussars. Born Holmfirth. Son of Mr J.W. Heppenstall. Employed as a piecer at Dover Mills, Holmfirth. Enlisted in 1916. Was stationed in County Cork, Ireland and was expecting to be demobilised shortly. Was severely injured in an explosion and died within 24 hours. Buried with full military honours. He was 24 years of age.

A letter from his officer to his parents says "Please accept my sincere condolences and regrets at the untimely death of No. 60817 Private G. Heppenstall. I feel sure it will be a source of gratification to you to know he died doing his duty. It was a pure accident for which no one was to blame. Pte. Heppenstall was a good soldier and an excellent man, and I can assure you all possible precautions were adopted to avoid anything of the nature of an accident happening."
Aged 22 years.
