Remember me with smiles and laughter,
for that is how I will remember you.
If you can only remember me with tears,
then don't remember me at all.

***************

Basil was my little blue Chihuahua. Yes, there are such a thing as "blue" Chihuahuas. His bluish, silvery fur was one of his most gorgeous features, along with his beautiful gray/greenish eyes. I loved him the moment I saw him. He was so scared that on the drive home he vomited in the car. It took a few days to get him comfortable enough to eat, but he never stopped once he started! Basil loved to eat, which he had in common with me! If he saw you in the kitchen, or smelled or heard food cooking, it was over, he would be right there begging for his expected share.

He was such an incredibly sweet, loving dog. At night when I was lying on my back in bed reading, he'd come sit on my chest and look down at me. And he always wanted to sleep in between my legs, I guess it was the warmest place in the bed!

He was so elegant, and would often sit with one front paw crossed over the other. In his youth, he could sprint like a deer, and he got out of the fence one time. My mother chased him down the alley in her bathrobe. When mom was mad at him, he knew it and he listened it her!

Basil loved when kids would visit. He was a kid at heart himself. Or rather puppy. It was hard to watch him get old. Suddenly, he could no longer jump on the couch, or climb his way up to the table to hunt for a meal. In the end, he could barely walk. Euthanizing my boy was probably the hardest decision of my life, especially so soon after losing his sister Jelly.

Our final days together were beautiful. I did what I could to make him feel loved. He was a wonderful friend. He gave me the precious gift of unconditional love, and I will miss him for as long as I live. May we meet again one day in a much fairer land.

I hope you have peace, my dear boy. I hope you and Jelly are happy together. Thank you for being you. I love you.
