ELLEN NICHOLSON ABEITA, 102, of Nespelem, died Jan. 14, 2014, at the Convalescent Center in Nespelem, Wash. Ellen was born March 19, 1911, to Narcisse and Madeline Nicholson at Ellisforde, Wash. She was the granddaughter of Chief Sarsarpkin. She attended school at Ellisforde, Tonasket and Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. She met Ed Abeita at Chemawa, they married, and moved to Isteta Pueblo, N.M. They had three children, twins Gene and Joan, and son, Robert. She worked as a hairdresser and homemaker. She was an avid gardener, a talented seamstress and a fabulous cook. She enjoyed art and crafts, spicy foods, traveling, and being with family. Following her husband's death in 1995, she moved to Seattle to live with her son, Robert, then later to Tonasket with her sister, Babe. Since 2002, she has lived at the Colville Convalescent Center in Nespelem, where she became their "queen of hearts." She is survived by her son, Robert; daughter-in-law, Connie; granddaughters, Carolyn and Cheryl Abeita of Isleta Pueblo; great- granddaughters, Lia and Breana of Isleta Pueblo; sisters, Mary "Babe" Nicholson of Tonasket and Tiny Brieler of Omak; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her son, Gene; daughter, Joan; the Nicholson brothers, George, Joe, Eddie, Narcisse Jr., Billy, John, Alec, Richard, and Raymond; and sisters Millie Jean Rollins, Joyce Adkinson, and Chrissy Hutton. Ellen's humor, quick wit and feisty personality will be remembered. Ellen was a classy lady and fun to be around. She will be missed by everyone. A funeral service was held at noon, Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel on Elmway in Okanogan, Wash. A graveside service followed at the Ellisforde Cemetery. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel was in care of the arrangements.
