E, 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged at Hart's Island, New York. Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers spells his name "Knockey," but the company register spells it as you see here.
After the war, he married Fannie Emig and fathered Emma J. (b. 09/14/67), Sarah Ann "Annie" (b. 10/19/77), Florence Estella (b. 12/27/79), Harvey E. (b. 12/20/81), and Ray Olive (b. 07/24/85). Fannie died January 1886, and he married widow Mary Melvine, née Barger, February 10, 1889, in Monkton, Maryland. However, John treated Mary so badly that she left him. He died at age 59-0-9.
