Lovey was the daughter of Richard and Stacia Ann (Lucas) Gunsalus. Her father was a veteran of the American Revolution.
She married William Helper in 1785 in Centre County. William and Lovey moved from Centre County, PA to Richland/Mansfield area of Ohio between 1821 and 1824. They lived there until sometime between 1846 and 1850 when they were living in Van Buren, Lagrange, Indiana.
William and Lovey had 12 children of which only nine have been identified: Ezra, James Crawford, Richard, John, Sarah Jane, Francis Asbury, Albert, George and Christopher.
